What is an Ombuds?

Ombuds
\ˈäm-ˌbu̇dz, om-buh dz, awm-, om-buh dz\

The primary duties of an organizational Ombuds are:

  1. To work with individuals and groups assisting them in developing options to help build communication and collaboration.
  2. To facilitate your efforts to learn from diverse perspectives in the workplace.
  3. To bring systemic concerns to the attention of the organization for resolution.

What an Ombuds does:

    • Actively listens to understand people while remaining neutral with respect to the facts.  The Ombuds doesn't listen to judge or decide who is right or wrong, s/he listens to understand all perspectives.  This is critical for developing options for resolution.
    • Refers people to appropriate resources for support in improving things at work

Crucial Conversations®
Oct. 9, 16 and 23, 2018
Based on the best-selling book of the same name, this 2.5-day training teaches skills for communicating when the stakes are high, opinions vary, and emotions run strong. It provides tools and skills for UNM employees at all levels, and may be particularly useful for managers who do performance evaluations. It's estimated that every crucial conversation we avoid holding, or don't do well, costs the organization $7,500.
